Chances are if you’ve lived in Ubud for any amount of time, you probably already know of The Pie Lady. She’s the Kiwi lady who makes those amazing Aussie style pies that are the perfect antidote when you’re missing a taste of home. For the longest time her pies were only available by delivery or at select outlets in Ubud, Sanur and Canggu, but now she’s finally got her own space at Ubud Deli in Mas, and it’s a pretty sweet spot to tuck into some flaky, buttery savoury and sweet pies.
If you’ve never been to Ubud Deli in Mas before, it’s pretty easy to find. From Ubud just head down Jalan Raya Mas and soon after the petrol station on the left you’ll see their sign with The Pie Lady’s signature pink and white sign on the top. They also have a huge street-art style mural along the wall that you can’t miss. If you’re coming by bike you can park in the front or if by car they have a big parking area in the back.
The cafe is located in the front of the deli on a breezy covered patio with rustic wooden tables, comfy wicker sofas, and a communal table with cushions on Coca-Cola crates for seats. The atmosphere is bright and cheery and the cushions add splashes of colour. Inside you’ll find the gourmet deli and a baking supplies shop with all sorts of local and imported goods and cooking and baking equipment that you can’t find anywhere else in Ubud.
For drinks you’ve got tons of options including fresh juices, hot and cold coffees and teas, soft drinks, sodas and milkshakes. We highly recommend the milkshakes—they’re cold and creamy, and when paired with one of the savoury pies a real indulgence. They also have Bundaberg Ginger Beer if you really want to go full Aussie.
On the menu you’ll find all your favourites from her delivery menu including the Steak & Pepper, Creamy Chicken & Mushroom, and Potato, Leek & Cheddar. She also has vegan options like the Thai Green Curry and Moroccan Veggies, as well as sweet pies like the Mixed Berry and Pina Colada. All savoury pies are IDR 45K with your choice of homemade tomato chutney or house gravy, and you have the option to add sides like mashed potatoes, salad, fries or sautéed veggies for an additional IDR 15K. Sweet pies go for for IDR 55K and come with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
We opted for the Steak & Pepper pie with mashed potatoes and the Creamy Mushroom & Herb with sautéed veggies, both with gravy because umm…. yeah, gravy. The pies came out piping hot and golden, the sides were decent portions, and there was a ton of delicious gravy to slather all over everything. Cutting through the crispy crusts revealed juicy minced steak seasoned to perfection, and creamy mushrooms with big slices that retained their earthy flavour and tender texture. On their own the pies would have been a pretty substantial snack, but with the addition of the sides, this was a hearty stick-to-your-bones meal.
We love that the The Pie Lady finally has a place where you can sit down and sample her pies in a cosy setting. Head here for a nice homestyle lunch, or for a sweet treat in the afternoon with a coffee or milkshake. We also love Ubud Deli for their great imported cheeses, meats and condiments, so it was nice to be able to have lunch and then do a bit of shopping afterwards. FYI—you can also pick up The Pie Lady’s pies in the Ubud Deli freezer, or place orders for delivery so you can enjoy her comfort food creations at home. She even has gluten-free options if you order in advance.
